SONG HISTORY

MENFORMATION adopted “Respect Yourself” as our theme song because it sends an important old-school message to our young people today. This remix was produced & arranged by Laythan Armor with a hip style that retains all the funk of the original.

“Respect Yourself” is the classic soul anthem made famous by The Staple Singers when it was released in late 1971 via Stax Records.  The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The song was written by Luther Ingram and Mack Rice. At the time, Luther Ingram was frustrated with the state of the world and he said “black folk need to learn to respect themselves !!! “  It was true then… and it is truer now.
